It’s Galileo Galilei’s birthday, so it’s time for a new interesting facts, illustrated.
1. His support of the Copernican theory didn’t win him any points with the Catholic Church, but his own observations supported this heliocentric theory. The church sentenced him to life imprisonment, but later turned it to house arrest.
2. His right middle finger is on display at the Museum of the History of Science in Florence.
3. Legend says he dropped balls off the Leaning Tower of Pisa to test the laws of universal acceleration. This is probably not true, but a lamp swing in the tower inspired his study of the pendulum.
